Mustafa Akyol-A Murder and A World Without Islam -

[Originally published in Hurriyet Daily News] -

Something terrible happened in Istanbul last Saturday. A newly married couple was shot dead in a car, only 10 days after their wedding. The police arrested the bride’s older brother as the suspect. The man confessed the crime and said that he had to kill his sister and her husband for her treason to the community – for this was a Christian-Muslim marriage the bride’s family strongly opposed. If you haven’t heard more about this story, you might easily assume that the lethal communalism in this shocking violence must have something to do with Islam. It is Muslims, after all, who have become notorious in the West for such honor killings. So, you might easily assume that the murdered bride, Soney Vural, 26, was a Muslim woman, and that her Muslim brother killed her for marrying a Christian infidel.

Muslim or Eastern?
But behold: the reality is the exact opposite. The Christian side in this tragedy is the bride and her family: They are members of the Turkish Armenian community. The Muslim side is that of the bridegroom, Zekeriya Vural, 29, and his family, which apparently had no problem with their son’s interfaith marriage. “A difference of religions should not be a problem,” indeed, said Cemil Vural, the Zekeriya’s Muslim uncle, explicitly. “We struggled so much for peace.” ]…]It is no secret that many Westernizers have been disturbed lately by some of the illiberal attitudes they see among Muslim some communities: A male-dominating culture that grants very little freedom to women; a rigid communalism that sees the outside world as corrupt and bans any form of “apostasy;” and a self-righteous attitude that sees all sorts of criticism as attacks that should be countered. Such cultural traits that some Muslims display – let alone violence and terrorism committed in the name of Islam – have led some Westernizers to suspect whether there is an inherent problem in Islam as religion. Some even believe that the world would be much better if the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, and the whole Islamic civilization had never existed.
In his recent book, A World without Islam, former CIA analyst and historian Graham Fuller takes on this argument very well. Despite all the superficial rhetoric on the supposed dichotomies between “Western values” and the “Muslim world,” Fuller shows that the real dichotomy is actually between the West and the East]…]
The ways of the fathers ]…]A World without Islam, I believe, is a must-read for any intelligent discussion on “Islam and the West.” It is also a good food for thought for both liberal Westerners and conservative Muslims. The former should understand that some of the things they see within Muslim societies and do not find terribly pleasant might not be the products of Islam as religion. Some are in fact the products of their own civilization, such as the doomed heritage of the West’s colonial adventures]…]Conservative Muslims, on the other hand, should beware of being trapped in the illiberal traditions of the East in the course of their more noble effort to stay loyal to their faith. In fact, breaking those illiberal traditions was one of the early impulses of Islam. The Quran criticized the Arabs who said, “We follow what we found our fathers upon,” and asked them: “What if their fathers had no sense at all?” (2:170)
Today, there still are many traditions that come from “fathers had no sense at all.” Challenging them is the only way to save our religions from bigotry – and to protect innocent lives.

Mongolia: Dzud, extreme cold forces families from traditional living to urban slums - Published: 4 March 2013 9:30 – By Pekka Reinikainen, Finnish Red Cross

In Mongolian, dzud is a silent disaster. Very few people will know the word, even if thousands suffer from its consequences. It is not an easy word to translate.
Dzud is heralded by a dry summer resulting in a poor harvest of hay for winter feed. Black dzud is characterised by extreme cold – down to -50°C – and white dzud is this cold accompanied by huge amounts of snow. It is a phenomenon that can have a major effect on the lives and livelihoods of those living in
Mongolia. Mongolians have grown used to dealing with the effects of cold, but dzud kills cattle when exposed to dropping temperatures and biting winds. For thousands of years nomadic Mongolian herdsmen have felt protected and safe under the open skies of the steppes and deserts of this vast country. But as a direct result of dzud, thousands of herders and their families are forced to resettle away from the places they called home. During the journey from the borderless expanse to the slums of the cities, these formerly free people lose not just livelihoods, but also culture and traditions that have evolved over thousands of years.

The development of the market economy, which started early 1990, left many Mongolians unemployed, and an estimated 150,000 more people took up herding. The animal stock of the country – cows, yaks, camels, horses, goats, and sheep – grew from 26 million heads in 1992, to 33 million in 1998. Overgrazing of the land exacerbated the effects of the dzud period. ]…]
For Mongolian herder families, losing the herd equals the end of the world, and this is the fate of tens of thousands of families who have moved to the cities, most of them to the slums of Ulaanbaatar.

In response to the dzud, from the summer of 2010 through to the spring of 2011, the Finnish Red Cross received funds from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) to carry out a programme with the Mongolian Red Cross Society. Nearly 9,000 people affected by the dzud were given assistance to recover faster and improve their resilience to future disasters.
The programme concentrated on the most vulnerable families, such as single parents or woman-headed households, exceptionally large families, families in extreme poverty, as well as families with members with disabilities, in five rural provinces and nine districts of the capital city
Ulaanbaatar.

Q:WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF HEAVEN? WHAT IMAGES - FROM SCRIPTURE, TRADITION, CULTURE OR YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE - BEST DESCRIBE HEAVEN FOR YOU?

Many of the great traditions advise against any attempt to imagine heaven - or what happens after we die. The Buddha always refused to define Nirvana, because we had neither the words nor the concepts for a state entirely free of selfishness and egotism. All our knowledge and imaginings depend upon and are colored by sensory experience and we cannot therefore envisage an existence without the body. 'Eye has not seen, ear has not heard', wrote St. Paul, 'what things God has prepared for all that love him '. And the Qur'an insists that every single one of its statements is an ayah, a 'parable', because we can only talk about God and the spirit in terms of signs or symbols - and that also goes for the great images of the Last Judgment or Paradise.
I personally think ]…] that religion is supposed to be about the loss of ego - not fantasies about its eternal survival in optimum conditions.
I suppose that is why the Chinese preferred to call the ultimate reality the Way, concentrating on the process of detaching oneself from ego by means of the discipline of compassion, rather than what lies at the end of the road - because this Way IS the transcendence we seek. 'The Kingdom of heaven is within you.’ A daily struggle]…]  dethroning the ego from the center of our world and putting others in its place, can give us intimations of 'heaven' right here on earth.

The Knights of Malta: a thorn in the Ottomans’ side Niki Gamm STANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News

For centuries, the Knights of Malta and the Ottomans were enemies. The knights have just celebrated their 900th anniversary and where once there was enmity toward the Turks, today there is cooperation

The knights of Malta order’s existence predates the Ottoman era and originated in Jerusalem in the second half of the 11th century when a monastery and hospital were established near the Holy Sepulcher around 1048.
Although the order’s primary task was to see to the hospital, it added military duties in the 12th century so it not only guarded hospitals but also the main roads in order to see that pilgrims and the sick were protected against attacks from the Saracens. The members of the order who were called knights and had to be of noble birth served under a grand master and took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For their services, they were often granted gifts of land rather than money and so had extensive holdings in numerous places throughout
Europe.
After Saladin conquered
Jerusalem in 1191, the knights originally charged with protecting pilgrims visiting the Holy Land, they extended this to providing protection on the sea and developed a significant fleet during their time on the island.
The second half of the 14th century saw the rise of the Ottoman Turks in western
Anatolia and the knights were hardly oblivious to threats coming from that area. Thanks to their strong fleet, they controlled the southern Aegean and set up fortifications on the island of Cos. In 1402, they erected the Castle of St. Peter in Bodrum which today is a major tourist attraction.
]…] Today the Knights of Malta direct their efforts at supporting hospitals and relief efforts around the world through, their humanitarian relief service. This includes providing aid to Syrian refugees in Turkish camps along Turkey’s border with Syria and in 2011 assisting the Turks from Ercis in Van following a disastrous earthquake. The Order of Malta certainly outlasted the Ottomans and now they’re back, not to fight but to help.

League of the “Hodenosanee” Iroquois - Morgan H. Lewis 1851
Introduction (extracts)
AMONG the Indian nations whose ancient seats were within the limits of our republic, the Iroquois have long continued to occupy the most conspicuous position. They achieved for themselves a more remarkable civil organization, and acquired a higher degree of influence, than any other race of Indian lineage, except those of Mexico and Peru. In the drama of European colonization, they stood, for nearly two centuries, with an unshaken front, against the devastations of war, the blighting influence of foreign intercourse, and the still more fatal encroachments of a restless and advancing border population. Under their federal system, the Iroquois flourished in independence, and capable of self-protection, long after the New England and Virginia races had surrendered their jurisdictions, and fallen into the condition ofdependent nations; and they now stand forth in our Indian history, prominent alike for the wisdom of their civil institutions, their sagacity in the administration of the League, and their courage in its defence. When their power and sovereignty finally passed away, it was through the events of peacefulll intercourse rather than from conquest or forcible subjugation. They fell under the giant embrace ofcivilization, victims of the successful warfare of intelligent social life upon the rugged obstacles of nature; and in a struggle which they were fated to witness as passive and silent spectators.

Name and Coat of Arms: Matrilateral Relations in Aristocratic Medieval Kinship (XIIIth-XIVth Centuries)

Anthroponymy and heraldic evidences are incentive together, between XIIth and XIVth centuries, to upgrade the matrilateral aspect of the bilateral kinship system in occidental society of the Middle Ages. The transmission of names and coats of arms by women is common, when their dowry and inheritance of material and non material goods is important. The phenomenon express that the marriage is homo- or hypogamic for the wife. Sometimes, according to the seal of any princesses (Jeanne de Châtillon, countess of Alençon and Chartres, Yolande de Flandre-Cassel, and her mother Jeanne de Bretagne), the passing on of name and coat of arms goes from mother to daughter, even from grandmother to granddaughter. This practice is a real feminine discourse of kinship, a celebration of the ancestresses’ prestige, a commemoration of their part in the lineage increase.
The name is the first emblem , the oldest, the most universal. From the XIth century in the Medieval West, profound changes underway in its application : drastic reduction of the number of personal names, large preponderance of the choice,  emerging and incremental diffusion of different types of nicknames that soon become hereditary.
Alongside other distinguishing marks arose : coats of arms, are being transmitted hereditarily, and their application spreads in a large part of the society : women, burghers, clerics,  communities.

Tikopia - Marie Aupourrain - Society from the remote southeastern Solomon islands, populating Tikopia but also spread in other islands of Temotu Archipelago (Santa Cruz Islands) [5 500].
This tropical island is mountainous and volcanic, its coastal areas are bordered by marshland of mangroves dominated by high lands above 1000 metres. Tikopia people practice slash and burn horticulture, cultivates yams on the coast, taro crop in the woods and sago palm and sweet potatoes on the highlands. That is in addition to the cultivation on bananas, coconuts, Betel nuts and breadfruits.
They fish in the sea (fishes like bonito, dolphins, turtles), in the reefs and the marshlands of mangroves (shellfish). They do so by angling, drifting net or with ichtyotoxic plants. The canoes are fashioned from a single tree trunk or with sheet piling wood ; they are often outrigger canoes or double hull (catamarans).
Fishermen and farmers living in villages in which each house shelters a more or less extended family, the Tikopia stand out from each other according to one of the two geographical areas of the island (faea and ravenga) in addition to one of the four territorial clans (kainanga) respectively symbolised by the yam, the taro, the coconut and the breadfruit. The chief of each clan is the only one to know the names of the primordial ancestors and along with the elders decides of the ritual actions. Due to his ancestral descent to the deity instigator of customs, one of the chief possesses authority over the community as a whole. All the Tikopia participate in the annual ceremonial cycles (mainly ancestors worshipping). Mostly religious affairs are not separated from the kinship system responsible for the extending, from one ritual onto the other, of the existing socio-cosmic ties between men and things. One of the main cultural features is the tremendous development involving exchange systems that, covering nature and human community, drive the community to replicate its own system. Common worship of Anglicanism is usual.
Adornments consist of beaten bark cloths, braiding fibres, shells, pierced teeth (dolphins, sharks and bats) fixed on cords, also feathers are among others significant attributes defining people or social groups. They are bound to the flow of food, shell and feathers money. Tattoos and body painting are also very widespread.
Tikopia language belongs to the Austronesian family.
From 1930 and during many years, the British anthropologist Raymond Firth studied the Tikopia society.

Benthic biomonitoring in Arctic Tundra Streams: a community-based approach in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada.  Recent residential, commercial, and industrial development in the catchments of several Arctic streams has heightened the need to assess these freshwater systems accurately. It was imperative to develop methods that would be both effective at judging ecological condition of tundra streams and suitable for use by local groups. An investigation of two streams influenced by urbanization in Iqaluit, Nunavut, was carried out between July and August each year in 2007-09. Simple summary metrics (e.g., Shannon Index) and multivariate analysis (DCA, RDA) both demonstrated biological impairment in the benthic community at site locations downstream of urbanized portions of a local stream. This impairment was characterized by a loss of diversity and a dramatic shift of the benthic community to one dominated by chironomids from the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Elevated levels of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) and several metals (Zn, Sr, Rb, Al, Co, Fe) were also found to be significantly related to benthic assemblages within these disturbed areas. This investigation also addressed taxonomic sufficiency, indicating that while family-level taxonomic identifications were sensitive enough to differentiate between pristine and impacted stream sites, a more precise taxonomic identification of the dominant benthos taxa (Insecta: Diptera: Chironomidae) to sub-family/tribe level identified a significant shift towards pollution-tolerant taxa. This higher taxonomic resolution will allow for the adaptation of protocols and the use of simple summary metrics to be effective for a community-based biomonitoring program in Arctic tundra streams.
