Macedonia puts up giant Alexander the Great statue
Wednesday, June 15, 2011 http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=macedonia-puts-up-giant-alexander-the-great-statue-2011-06-15
Macedonia began assembling a giant bronze statue of Alexander the Great in the capital Skopje on Tuesday, a move set to provoke anger in neighboring Greece, which also claims the ancient hero as its own. Large sections of the bronze statue were brought in from Florence, Italy to a fenced-off area in the center of Skopje, with local authorities announcing the procedure of assembling the 22-meter monument would last two weeks. Macedonia is already at loggerheads with Athens over its name. Macedonia officially became a candidate for European Union membership in 2005, but Athens has blocked it from accession to the 27-country bloc and NATO saying the name Macedonia implies a claim on the northern Greek region of the same name.
‘Warrior On a Horse’
Now Alexander the Great enters the fray. The 10-meter high statue of the 4th-century warrior-king sitting astride his horse will be put on a pedestal with the whole monument, according to local media, costing 9 million euros ($13 million). Skopje authorities have officially called the statue, designed by local sculptor Valentina Stevanovska, a “Warrior On a Horse” in a bid to prevent Greek objections. Both Macedonia and Greece claim Alexander the Great as their own. Born in Pella, in modern-day Greece, Alexander conquered the Persian Empire and much of the world known to ancient Greeks before dying in Babylon in 323 BC at the age of 32. Macedonia decided to finance the statue in 2007, the year after it changed the name of Skopje airport to “Alexander the Great” in a move that also riled Athens.

Saving Mount Everest
Restoring Dignity to the Mountain: Liberating Mount Everest from Rubbish
A project from EcoHimal and Everest Summiteers' Association (ESA) with international partners
Chomo lungma – Mother Goddess of the Universe, as she is known to the Tibetans.
Sagarmatha – so high that no bird can fly, as the Nepalese say
Mount Everest – the international name of the world’s highest summit.
However you call it, this matchless peak has awakened human longings and attracted mountaineers from all over the globe, as if by magic. Since the first successful summit expedition in 1953 the stream of visitors has grown and grown.
In 1976, Sagarmatha National Park was established, as one of the first national conservation areas in Nepal; only three years later, UNESCO followed up by declaring it a World Natural Heritage.
The Everest region soon developed into a major tourist destination. The steep increase in the numbers of visitors has entailed a considerable burden on the natural surroundings, including the emergence of a veritable mountain of rubbish, from Base Camp and up into the high ‘death zone’. Also the local Sherpa villages and lodges along the trekking routes lack sustainable, responsible approaches to dealing with waste.

Women’s Director puts God first in partnership - Created 05/19/2011 - 13:19 By Len Garae - Vanuatu
“We have done a lot of paperwork, we have done a lot of friendships but without the Source things will remain as they always have. We cannot afford at this time to have hearts that are heavy. We need to return to God to make sure that the Source of that partnership is true and true only”. Director of Women’s Affairs Dorosday Kenneth made the above statement in her address to the women and men of Emua Village last Friday. To illustrate her words, the Director accepts ritual tapa mat gift from women’s leader in EmuaInstead of celebrating the National Women’s Day in Port Vila, she was invited by Shefa Province to tour the villages round rural Efate with the Shefa President, Secretary General and 18 Provincial Councilors. The objective of the trip was for the Councilors to see and hear first hand from the women’s committees how the Road Markets have been helping to make money for the villagers to pay for the school fees of their children.
“I want to encourage us all to return to the focus which is the Source of partnership while the Theme for the Celebration of National Women’s Day is ‘Partnership for Change”, she said. “And until and unless we all look to see what it is that drives us to enable change to take place that change must originate from the heart. But prior to that, you must recognise the importance of the participation of women, children and people with disabilities since if you ignore them, nothing will change.”
]…]She said she has heard from the women leaders themselves who praised their Province for helping them to earn money without leaving their villages.

Canadian and U.S. Indigenous Communities Seek Protection of Land and Water Rights before IACHR
On May 23, 2011
In Canada, the Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group – a group of First Nations communities in British Columbia – has requested precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, seeking to stop the sale of their historic land to the provincial and Canadian governments by a logging corporation. [Canada.com; Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group] The request alleges that the Canadian government has failed to consult the affected First Nations communities regarding the sale, in violation of its international obligations.
The group filed a related petition before the IACHR in 2008, which the Commission declared admissible in 2009. [Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group] The petition challenged the Canadian government’s failure to protect the communities’ property rights and its sale of the ancestral lands without prior consultation to logging companies, which allegedly proceeded to cause irreversible environmental damage. Read the admissibility report here.
This month, the Eastern Navajo Diné community of New Mexico submitted a petition to the IACHR, challenging the U.S. federal government’s award of a mining license that would allow Hydro Resources Inc. to source uranium from the aquifer that is the community’s only source of drinking water. [Indian Country Today] The health of the Navajo community has reportedly previously been affected by uranium mining sites across the southwest United States.
Hoping this will not remain as a dead letter….

When Talks Fail, Try Belly Dance - TEL AVIV–JAFFA, Israel, May 18, 2011 (IPS) - "Hop-a-li, Hop-a-la!" On the stage of the Arab-Hebrew Theatre established in the ancient Arab port of the vibrant Jewish metropolis, a troupe of Israeli men and women interlaces, belly dancing to a frenetic Hafla tune. By Pierre Klochendler
Never mind the seemingly insolvable decades-old Arab-Israeli conflict, the absence of peace talks, the plausible U.N.-endorsed recognition of Palestinian statehood, Palestinian unity, the fear of a new Intifadah uprising; forget about the winds of change sweeping away the old Arab regimes of the Middle East.
For the past decade or so, like a hot Hamsin desert gust blowing from the ‘Orient’, belly dancing has swept over Israel, and swept away the usual aversion of this Western-oriented society towards Arab culture. Belly dancers are fast becoming the hottest trend at the moment, and the pure ‘oriental’ fun dressed in shimmering sensuality has turned into the highlights of nightlife.
For the uninitiated outsider, the groove, like a jinni released from a bottle, unleashes fantasies of Arabian nights, and has patently sordid associations – with the ultimate dream of a harem concubine titillating men of power, rejoicing in her femininity in a ritual-like celebration of womanly charms. Harem associations are standard Westerner made stereotype of what Arab women are or could be.
Here, belly dancing is spiced with a definite Mediterranean flavour, with scents of a Greek Sirtaki, punctured by the customary exclamation, "Yasu”. Israel's belly dancing also borrows from decadent cabaret-style musicals, trades the songs of lost love by the legendary singer, the "Eastern Star" Umm Qulthum, and dresses the osée Egyptian queen of belly dancing Fifi Abdo in Broadway star Liza Minnelli's top hat, stockings and cane.
The "ladies and gents" performers put up a nonsensical parody of seduction and lust that mixes some Gypsy rhythm with musical theatre tunes reminiscent of the German Jewish composer Kurt Weill.
So, with so many illusions and allusions – cultural, historical, political – can belly dancing still bring Jews and Arabs closer together under its spell?
Here, at the "Saydati wa Sadati" club, it goes without saying: "Belly dancing is so strong, so powerful, that when people dance together, they're connecting,it's incredible, once people dance, they become alike!"
So, shall we dance? Shall we bellydance?

Alors, on danse ? On fait une danse du ventre ?
