Vanuatu US community attend reunion in British Columbia

By Winston Tarere July 4, 2011
Anthropologists who study our Melanesian cultures refer to us as very rooted people – rooted in our land, culture and our people in society. No matter where we are on this planet, our traditional values and our sense of belonging continues to act like a homing beacon – reminding us of our familial descent and our common identity as Ni-Vanuatu – linking and grounding us in a rich history that obligates us as its custodians to pass itswisdom on to the next generation. This forms an integral part of what a small group of our Vanuatu community in the United States of America (USA) will be doing on a four-day reunion campon VictoriaIsland in British Columbia, Canada.
]…]Six families will be travelling from different parts of the United States and within Canada for the camp starting on the 1st to the 4th of July. While the rest of America will be celebrating their independence with fireworks on the 4th of July, the next generation of Ni-Vanuatu and children with Ni Vanuatu ancestry will be learning the basic foundations of Vanuatu culture.
“Our goal is to educate our children in our culture through Vanuatu Cuisine, storytelling, dances, etc. We will teach them traditional rhymes such as ‘ngisi-ngisi-ngisigahi’ and ‘tutuibwao,’ from Pentecost and other children’s songs from Malekula and other parts of Vanuatu. We will also make laplap and the Sorso from Malekula, simboro, tuluketc…so that our children are familiar with the kind of food we have in Vanuatu and also see how it is prepared. “We are very far from home and getting together, enjoying each-others company and doing all these brings us closer to home and at the same time reminds us of our role as parents to communicate to our children the rich cultural heritage that we have as Ni-Vanuatu.
The special guest at their camp will be the former Deputy Prime Minister and independence leader Sethy Regenvanu and Mrs Regenvanu.
