“Say no” considering options this weekend

The “Say no to the WTO” committee is planning its next moves to stop the Government agreeing to accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) next month. The WTO expects accession to be agreed and the legislation to be in place for the November sitting of Parliament. The churches feel an open economy has failed to guarantee just outcomes for the people of Vanuatu, appropriate consultations having broken down long ago. Over eight hundred senior members of all Vanuatu Christian Council churches held the consultation at the Malasi Tabu Church, Freshwater Port Vila, concerned that “globalisation” and “universalist cultures” were reducing life to a “single organised way of thinking and living”, alien to Vanuatu. The Call urged “a re-thinking of our governance, our social relationships and social justice, our economic life and our relationship to the land.”
Steps have been taken to resolve some of the worst injustices where lands titles are concerned, the Malvatumauri being presently - and finally - drawn into the judicial process to ensure that customary ownership of land will continue as provided for the by makers of the Constitution and as intended by the makers of that document.]…]
The chiefly system of justice is acknoledge by all, it is wrong to treat it as some type of alternative system of justice; it should be brought fully into the judicial system (N of T) MALVATUMAURI National Council of Chiefs of Vanuatu – Acts of the SUMMIT OF LAND. 2006 – To the communities :
39/ Each clan, nasara, must transmit to young generations all information concerning boundaries of customary lands. 40/ Each clan, nasara, shall put to one side lands, shores and reefs to benefit the young generations.
Le système judiciaire des chefs est reconnu par tous, c’est une énorme erreur de le considérer comme l’alternative d’un système judiciaire ; il devrait être totalement intégré au système juridique du pays. Le comité du groupe ‘dites non à l’OMC’ prévoit le blocage des accords d’adhésion à l’OMC par le gouvernement des Vanuatu. L’OMC envisage un accord d’adhésion et la mise en place de la législation par le Parlement en novembre. Les églises considèrent cependant qu’une économie ouverte ne garantie pas des revenus équitables à la population des Vanuatu. Huit cents anciens, membres de toutes les églises du Conseil Chrétien ont procédé aux consultations à Port Vila dans les locaux de Malasi Tabu Church préoccupés par la ‘globalisation’ et ‘l’universalisme des cultures’ qui réduisent nos vies à « une pensée unique concernant la vie », pensée étrangère aux Vanuatu. L’appel demande un engagement à ‘repenser notre gouvernance locale, nos relations sociales et à la justice, notre vie économique et notre relation à la terre.’
Des décisions ont été prises afin de résoudre les pires injustices concernant les droits fonciers, le Malvatumauri étant finalement partiellement intégré au système judiciaire du pays afin de garantir le droit foncier coutumier tel qu’il a été déclaré dans la Constitution et par les fondateurs du document. ]…]
