40 years work behind new Samoan-English dictionary

A new bilingual Samoan-English Dictionary has been published as a result of forty years work.

The book, Tusi’upu Samoa, was born out of a medical doctor’s frustration at not being able to communicate with his Samoan patients in New Zealand.

Now retired, Dr Papali’i Semisi Ma’ia’i is happy that the book has finally been published.

“One of the reasons I did it was while I was working in Kumeu West Auckland I had to see a lot of patients mostly Samoans who couldn’t speak English. And I discovered that the Samoan language was very insufficient compared to English. You can’t get the word to word equivalent.”

Dr Papali’i Semisi Ma’ia’i says he is still working on another project: a monolingual dictionary for Samoans.

40 années de travail pour le nouveau dictionnaire Samoan-Anglais.

Après quarante ans de recherches, le nouveau dictionnaire Samoan-Anglais vient d’être publié.

Cet ouvrage, Tusi’upu Samoa paraît grâce à la frustration d’un médecin qui ne parvenait pas à communiquer avec ses patients samoans en Nouvelle-Zélande. Maintenant retraité, docteur Papali’i Semisi Ma’ia’i se félicite de la publication de ce dictionnaire.

« Une des raisons pour lesquelles je l’ai réalisé vient de l’époque où je travaillais à Kumeu West Auckland (hôpital régional), je devais consulter de nombreux patients samoans qui ne parlaient pas anglais. Je remarquais aussi que la langue samoane se traduisait difficilement en anglais. Il n’y a pas d’équivalence en ‘mot à mot’. »

Dr Papali’i Semisi Ma’ia’i travaille en ce moment sur un autre projet : un dictionnaire monolingue pour les samoans.
