A big-budget miniseries about John F. Kennedy’s presidency that was criticized for its historical accuracy before it was even filmed will not be shown on the History channel, the cable network has announced.

]…]On Friday the cable channel said in a statement that this “dramatic interpretation” of the Kennedys’ story, which had already been filmed and was being prepared for broadcast in the spring, “is not a fit for the History brand.” The decision was first disclosed by The Hollywood Reporter.

In December 2009, History announced that it had ordered “The Kennedys” from the producer Joel Surnow, an Emmy Award-winning creator and former executive producer of the Fox series “24” who is well known for his conservative politics. At that time, Mr. Surnow said he could handle the Kennedy saga fairly, telling The New York Times in an interview: “We’re not making judgments about their political decisions. This is a family story.”

But in February, “The Kennedys” was criticized by a group of historians who were shown early drafts of its scripts by Robert Greenwald, a liberal filmmaker who had obtained the screenplays. Among the critics was Theodore C. Sorensen, the former Kennedy adviser, who said of the screenplays, “Every single conversation with the president in the Oval Office or elsewhere in which I, according to the script, participated, never happened.”

The statement from History on Friday said the miniseries had been “produced and acted with the highest quality.” It continued: “We recognize historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling and commend all the hard work and passion that has gone into the making of the series, but ultimately deem this as the right programming decision for our network.”

]…]Mr. Greenwald said in an email that History’s decision not to show the miniseries was “a great victory for the legacy of President Kennedy and for the entire Kennedy family.”

Representatives for History said the channel would not comment beyond its statement.

La mini-série à gros budget narrant la présidence de John F. Kennedy critiquée pour son inexactitude historique avant même d’être filmée, ne sera pas diffusée comme le réseau câblé l’avait annoncée. Vendredi la chaîne câblée déclarait que ‘l’interprétation dramatique’ de l’histoire des Kennedys, déjà filmée et en préparation pour sa diffusion au printemps, ne correspondait pas à la philosophie de la chaîne ‘History’. Information révélée tout d’abord par ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

En décembre 2009, ‘History’ sollicitait Joël Surnow, vainqueur d’un Emmy Award pour la réalisation de la série Fox ‘24 heures chrono’, connu pour ses opinions républicaines. A cette date, Mr Surnow déclarait être capable de réaliser la saga des Kennedys, en disant au New York Times : » Nous ne jugerons pas leurs décisions politiques, ce sera une saga familiale. » Mais en février, la série ‘Kennedys’ était décriée par un groupe d’historiens à qui Robert Greenwald, un réalisateur prodigue qui avait obtenu le scénario, avait montré quelques ébauches. Parmi les critiques, Theodore C. Sorensen, ancien conseiller des Kennedys, disait à propos du scénario : » Rien de ce qui s’est dit entre moi – selon le script - et le Président dans le bureau ovale ou ailleurs ne s’est jamais produit. »

Selon le communiqué de vendredi de la chaîne ‘History’ , la série a été ‘produite et jouée dans les règles de l’art’. Il dit aussi ‘ nous reconnaissons que la fiction historique est un important support pour raconter une histoire et exigeons de nombreux efforts dans le travail et de la passion afin de réaliser la série, et nous la considérons comme une juste décision de programmation pour notre réseau.’

Mr Greenwald disait dans un e-mail que la décision par la chaîne ‘History’ de ne pas diffuser la série était ‘une grande victoire pour l’héritage du président Kennedy et pour toute la famille Kennedy’. Les représentants de la chaîne n’ont pas voulu surenchérir cette déclaration.
