By the
end of the novel 'Mutation' from Robin Cook, Victor Franck Junior, VJ embodies
on his own a totalitarian system seeking the total control of reproduction of
the species, as Nazis and Neo-Nazis do. Furthermore, he physically
personifies the specific ideal of Aryan
Race as imagined by the Third Reich theorists : while his parents have brown
hair, his eyes are surprisingly blue and cold. The same applies for the gifted
children from implant, in a surrogate mother, of embryos produced by in vitro
fertilization from Marsha's and Victor's ova. It is a recurring phenomenon in
Science-fiction novels : children
embodying a new human race, superior to the former, are almost always blond
with blue eyes and an inhuman coldness. This being the case of the children
from mysterious implant of the women in "Village of the Damned" (Rilla 1960, Carpenter 1995). Idem in
the movie godsend (Beaumont, 1980) a
family obligingly hosts an unknown woman who is just going to give birth. As
soon as she gave birth, she disappears fading without trace. The little girl,
blond with blue eyes like her mother, is going to kill member after member the
four children of her foster family. These movies suggest that those children
which came from elsewhere belong to a more advanced race that lost the capacity
for reproduction. They have an upper intelligence and extraordinary
capabilities but, like VJ, they lack all emotions and are very cruel, sometimes
pervert. Their aim: to use earthly human female as surrogate mother to finally
supplant this inferior human kind they feel justified to exploit. Like the
cuckoo, these species lay their eggs into others' nests and destroy those which
were already there. We have here an excellent illustration of the complexity of
racialisation ideological process: the old climate theory (Aristotle and
Montesquieu) continues to operate without us knowing and is integrated to
Malthusian and Darwinian theories. On one side, the lower categories of humans
(classes and races) are expected to be most prolific while the upper categories
would tend to be infertile, That's why those last need to find ways to control
reproduction to their benefit. On the other side, one tends to oppose northern
white races superiority, rational, strong and domineering to the inferiority of
the southern regions 'races' emotional and soft and hence more doomed to
enslaving. The first being blond with blue eyes while the other with brown, black
or darkly pigmented skin which is often perceived as in substitution for the
foregoing species on the evolution scale, of which the Northern races have
moved away before. But there is another theory, mostly forgotten by
anthropologists, likely to explain the Northern like human kind granted to the
human species that should supplant ours in fictional imaginary. It creeps
constantly into contemporary ideology without any one taking reference to it. It
is the neoteny theory proposed by Block. To him, the characteristic of human
body, depigmentation, absence of pelage, ovoid skull with a big brain, the face
with juvenile appearance by reducing the jaw size, the teeth, the eye brow arch
and the nasal line - would be the result of the emergence in human beings of an
inhibiting factor of morphological structures differentiation so that it does
not progress onto a completed adult phase as in other mammal species. On the
one side, human would be born neotenic, that is prematurely, and the late
closing of the skull bones joints, the fontanels, was to have enabled the
continuation of the cerebral development and the related intellectual skills, far beyond those of
other primates. On the other side, this human being adult would retain the
physical characteristics belonging to primates fetus. It should soon be possible
of mankind superiority to be directly correlated to his physical
characteristics. Hence, to Gould, "juvenile characteristics are a
potential adaptations tank". It will be noted in which extent this
discourse about maintaining totipotency resonates with the actual discourse
over stem cells: the least an organism, or one of its elements, is being
differentiated in its embryological development, the more it is likely to be
perceived as the bearer of a endless future or infinitely reproduced. This idea
when used in popular culture representations led undoubtedly to describe the
species likely to overtake human kind in the fields of technology and
intelligence - extraterrestrial beings travelling from one galaxy to another -
as transparent fetus: a big ovoid head with big eyes on a small body and/or
elongated shape looking like an embryo (ET
for Steven Spielberg, the Asgards in the American tv show Stargate). Access to reproduction has ceased to be the first
'raison d'être' of maturation of individuals, as it is the case for other
species much more prolific than mankind.

De plus, il
personnifie physiquement l'idéal type de la race aryenne tel que fantasmé par
les théoriciens du troisième Reich : alors que ses parents sont bruns, il est
blond et ses yeux sont d'un bleu surprenant et froid. Il en est de même des
autres enfants surdoués issus de l'implantation dans une mère porteuse des
embryons obtenus par fécondation in vitro des ovules de Marsha et de Victor.
C'est un phénomène récurrent dans la science-fiction : les enfants
incarnant une nouvelle espèce humaine, supérieure à la précédente, sont presque
toujours blonds aux yeux bleus et d'une froideur quasi inhumaine. C'est le cas
des enfants issus de l'insémination mystérieuse des femmes dans Le village des Damnés (Rilla 1960,
Carpenter 1995). Idem dans le film Godsend (Beaumont, 1980) où une
famille accueille obligeamment une inconnue sur le point d'accoucher. A peine
a-t-elle mis au monde son bébé qu'elle disparaît sans laisser de traces. La
petite fille, blonde aux yeux bleus comme sa mère, va tuer l'un après l'autre
les quatre enfants de sa famille d'accueil. Dans ces films, on nous laisse
subodorer que ces enfants venus d'ailleurs appartiennent à une espèce plus
évoluée ayant perdu la capacité de se reproduire seule. Ils ont une
intelligence supérieure et des capacités extraordinaires mais, comme VJ, ils
sont dépourvus d'affects et d'une grande cruauté, parfois perverse. Leur
objectif : utiliser les femelles humaines terriennes comme mères de
substitution pour supplanter, à terme, une humanité qu'ils jugent très
inférieure à eux et qu'ils estiment donc en droit d'exploiter. A l'instar du
coucou, cette espèce dépose ses œufs dans le nid des autres et suppriment ceux
qui s'y trouvaient déjà. Nous avons là l'illustration de la
complexification du processus idéologique de racialisation : la vieille théorie
des climats (d'Aristote à Montesquieu) continue à opérer à notre insu (Bourdieu
1980), et elle est intégrée aux théories malthusiennes et darwiniennes. D'une
part, les catégories inférieures (classes, puis races) sont censées être plus
prolifiques que les supérieures qui auraient, au contraire, une propension à l'hypofertilité,
d'où la nécessité pour ces dernières de trouver les moyens de contrôler la
reproduction à leur profit. D'autre part, on tend à opposer la supériorité des
« races » nordiques, rationnelles, dures et « naturellement »
dominatrices, à l'infériorité des « races » méridionales,
émotionnellement chaudes et molles et, par là, vouées à l'asservissement. Les
unes sont blondes aux yeux bleus, les autres brunes voire noires, une pigmentation
foncée qui est souvent perçue comme
substitutive de l'espèce qui les précède tout juste sur l'échelle de
l'évolution, dont les races nordiques se sont déjà éloignées plus avant. Mais
il est une autre théorie, généralement négligée par les ethnologues,
susceptible d'expliciter le type nordique conféré à l'espèce humaine qui
devrait supplanter la nôtre dans les représentations fictionnelles. Elle
infiltre l'idéologie raciale contemporaine constamment sans qu'on s'y réfère
jamais directement. Il s'agit de la théorie de la fœtalisation ou de la
néoténie proposée par Bolk. Pour celui-ci, la particularité de la morphologie
du corps humain – dépigmentation, absence de pelage, boîte crânienne ovoïde
contenant un gros cerveau, visage d'aspect juvénile par réduction de la taille
des mâchoires, des dents, des arcades sourcilières et de la projection nasale –
serait la résultante de l'apparition chez l'homme d'un facteur inhibant la
différenciation des structures morphologiques de sorte qu'elles n'évoluent pas
vers un stade adulte achevé comme chez les autres mammifères. D'une part,
l'homme naîtrait néotène, c'est-à-dire avant terme, et la fermeture tardive
consécutive des jointures des os de son crâne, des fontanelles, aurait permis
la poursuite du développement cérébral et des capacités intellectuelles
afférentes, bien au-delà de ceux des autres primates. D'autre part, il
conserverait, une fois devenu adulte, les caractéristiques physiques propres
aux fœtus des primates. La supériorité intellectuelle de l'homme va donc
pouvoir être directement corrélée à son aspect physique si spécifique. De fait,
pour Gould, « les caractéristiques juvéniles sont un réservoir
d'adaptations potentielles ». On remarquera combien ce discours sur le maintien
d'une totipotence rejoint le discours actuel sur les cellules souches : moins
un organisme ou un de ses éléments est différencié sur le plan embryologique,
plus il est perçu comme porteur d'un devenir sinon infini du moins infiniment
démultiplié. Cette idée reprise au niveau des représentations populaires a sans
doute conduit à dépeindre les espèces censées dépasser l'homme sur les plans de
la technologie et de l'intelligence – les extra-terrestres voyageant d'une
galaxie à l'autre – comme des fœtus translucides : une grosse tête ovoïde avec
de grands yeux sur un corps petit et/ou longiligne ayant parfois l'apparence
d'un embryon (cf. E.T., l'extra-terrestre de Spielberg, les
Asgards de la série américaine Stargate).
L'accession à la reproduction ne constitue plus la raison d'être première de la
maturation des individus, comme c'est habituellement le cas dans les autres
espèces inférieures qui sont beaucoup plus prolifiques que lui.
